Bred bild av den moderna judendomens mosaik En mänsklighet i mänskligheten – Ett reportage om det judiska folket av Staffan Skott (Norstedts) Staffan Skott har med En mänsklighet i mänskligheten åstadkom- mit något som jag som judaistiker beundrar. Tonen är spirituell och avslappnad, ofta rent personlig – ett uppfriskande sätt att ta sig an den judiska historien. Skott räds inte att lyfta detaljer som ofta förbises eller behandlas som en parentes i liknande verk. Hans kapitel om judiska efternamn visar på grundlig efterforsk- ning och djup kunskap om länderna i det forna Sovjet och dess judiska befolkning. Min entusiasm är dock inte odelad. Verket lämnar mycket att önska avseende hantering av judiska begrepp. I diskussionen om ashkenazisk kontra sefardisk judendom beskriver Skott den mindre grupperingen sefarder som ”de efterkommande till den en gång stora judenheten i Spanien och Portugal”. Om Skott med ashkenazer och sefarder hade avsett liturgisk tillhörighet hade hans påståenden varit solklara, men han tycks i huvudsak syfta på geografiskt ursprung. Världens icke-ashkenaziska judenhet följer vad man ofta kallar för en sefardisk rit, men är sällan släkt med de judar som fördrevs från den iberiska halvön under 1400-talets sista år. Vidare har jag svårt för Skotts beskrivning av den judiska ultraortodoxin som ”med sina avvikande beteenden och uppseen- deväckande klädsel [får] en uppmärksamhet från massmedierna som inte motsvarar deras ganska ringa antal”. Att Skott är ateist med en världsbild präglad av en uppväxt i en kristen kontext är uppenbart, men jag anser att man bör vara försiktig med att tillskriva andra religiösa och kulturella grupper ett ”avvikande be- teende”. Samtidigt är den lättsamma tonen bokens stora behållning och jag uppskattar att Skott närmar sig judendomen med gott mod och stora gester. Författaren lyckas med konststycket att måla upp en bred bild av ju- dendomen som folk, kultur och religion. Bo- ken fyller sin funktion som en inspirerande och informationsrik introduktion till juden domen och judenhetens historia, faktiskt bättre än andra böcker på senare år. Som läsare bör man vara medveten om att Skott inte är judaistiker, men han fungerar däre- mot som en utmärkt och engagerad guide till den mosaik som är modern judendom. ■
